Work Schedule: 10-15 hours per week, at the discretion of employee and supervisor
Responsible for system maintenance and tuning to ensure the highest level of performance, availability and uptime for mission critical enterprise systems. Serves as a technical expert in the area of system administration for complex operating systems. Recommends the redesign and configuration of operating systems and system applications. Investigates and analyzes feasibility of system requirements and ensures adherence to system specifications. Identifies methods, solutions, and provides project leadership and management in order to provide a high level of service to customers of the department.

Essential Job Functions
Systems Administration – Is fully proficient in all aspects of System Administration (as shown below). In addition is responsible for the ongoing development and improvement of processes and procedures supporting all systems administration activities.
- Configures and maintains assigned platform and/or system, which includes properly managing the operating system and ensuring installed software is operating as expected.
- Ensures platform or system is operating correctly at all times without over-utilizing resources and is recognizing connections with other applicable machines on the network.
- Regularly adds and deletes user logins and maintain user accounts; provide system security by checking files and directories for access, checking password changes, and restricting access by outside users on the platform or system.
- Configures system security via file permissions, host trusting, etc..
- Ensures that processes and procedures are in place to perform system backups according to departmental procedures.
- Schedules and implements system backups and data storage processes.
- Assigns and monitors system resources such as disk space, processor time, and network bandwidth, ensuring a file system is cleared when it fills.
- Balances work across all available operating systems in an effort to maintain system load.
- Assists in ordering, planning, and installing new or used hardware as requested.
- May install and test client file transfers adhering to departmental policies and procedures.
- Sets up batch jobs to run repeatedly as requested, ensuring process runs according to schedule.
- Installs all new versions of software and/or hardware on applicable units, coordinating upgrades with appropriate departmental staff.
- Performs proactive analysis of platform data (i.e. disk utilization, system load, etc.) to predict overloads or failures and correct these problems ahead of time.
- Ensures that the system is running correctly and that as much of the equipment is in service as possible; maintain all documentation related to systems administration.
- Provides optimal support to patients and staff.
- Ensures incidents, requests and changes are managed according to documented processes and within documented timeframes.
Develops new system and application implementation plans, custom scripts and testing procedures to ensure operational reliability.
- Trains technical staff in how to use new software and hardware developed and/or acquired.
Proficient in troubleshooting.
- Leads problem-solving efforts often involving outside vendors and other support personnel and/or organizations.
- Mentors System Administrators and other staff on troubleshooting techniques and processes.
Establishes guidelines and methods for the installation and management of the host computer operating systems, disk arrays, fiber channel switches, tape libraries, and other components.
Develops procedures to maintain security and protect systems from unauthorized use, acts of nature and user abuse.
Develops procedures, programs and documentation for backup and restoration of host operating systems and host-based applications.
Develops and coordinates project directions and schedules to maximize benefits and minimize impacts on the customer organizations.
- Provides leadership in planning and implementation of projects requiring IT systems and services supported by System Administration.
Develops tools, procedures, and training sessions for Operations, Service Desk, and Desktop Support staff to assist with work.
Oversees the data center and computer host systems including hardware, software, and equipment such as air-conditioning system, UPS (uninterrupted power system) and fire protection system.

Job Requirements
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field required.
- Equivalent work experience (5 years) in a similar position may be substituted for educational requirements.
Experience
- 2 to 5 years experience administering and maintaining an operating system is required.
- 1 year experience in healthcare technology preferred.
License/Certifications
- N/A
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- Technical
- Knowledge of shell scripting (e.g. ksh, bash, tcl, perl) is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of applications, tools and techniques to maintain systems with the least amount of human intervention.
- Other
- Suite of office software packages
- 1 year of VMware experience preferred.
- Based on assigned area, 3 years supporting and troubleshooting hardware to include IBM and HP preferred.
- Based on assigned area, experience in a medium server environment (e.g. 100-500+ machines).
- Ability to respond to incidents on a 24x 7 basis.
- This position will also provide Tier 2 triage and escalation support.
