Job Description

Position Summary

Student employees are in part-time positions hired for short-term projects not to exceed one thousand (1,000) hours per year. Unless otherwise stated or as prescribed by law, National University does not provide student employees with benefits including accrued sick and vacation, health and life insurance, or other benefits. Student employee positions are available to the following.  

  • Students enrolled and attending courses 
  • Undergraduate and graduate students in any school or program 
  • Full-time or part-time students 

Position Summary:

  • The Teaching Assistant serves in an instructional capacity. Graduate Teaching Assistants provide professional level instruction under the direct supervision of faculty. Departments may consider students who have completed a master’s degree or its equivalent (30 hours of graduate work) for a Graduate Teaching Assistant. Available to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides support to faculty to ensure a safe and stimulating educational environment.
  • Assists faculty in planning and preparation for daily activities, aids instructional efforts of the faculty.
  • Assists faculty in preparing lesson outlines, plans, and curricula in assigned areas.
  • Plans, prepares, and develops various teaching aids for use in classroom.
  • Presents subject matter to students, under the guidance of a faculty member.
  • Meets with faculty and students.
  • Prepares class or assessment lab, including class material preparation.
  • Grades class assignments, tests and/or assessment protocols (assessment lab).
  • Responds to student emails.
  • Conducts study sessions for students.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • Currently enrolled in a doctoral program in a related field.
  • Prior experience in mentoring, tutoring, or teaching preferred.
  • Strong academic record.

Competencies/Technical/Functional Skills:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Experience working with students in an academic setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills.
  • Experience in collaborative relationship building.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of students.

Candidate receiving offers will be offered a salary/pay rate commensurate with experience that vary based on a candidate’s qualifications, skills, and competencies.  Absent exceptional circumstances, candidates will be offered a salary within this range for this position. The minimum salary will be offered based on the minimum exemption threshold based on state of residency.
