Software Engineering is one of the specialization tracks in the Software and Service Engineering major of the Master’s Programme in Computer, Communication and Information Sciences. In the Software Engineering track, students learn the processes, methods and techniques used in professional software development in organizations and projects of various sizes. Core subjects include various software development activities, such as requirements engineering, design, implementation, testing and deployment, as well as supporting activities including project management, organizational development, and configuration management. After completing their studies, Software Engineering majors typically work in industry in roles such as Scrum Master, team lead, software architect, project manager, test lead, process engineer, or product owner.
We are now looking for a
Part-time teacher for teaching the course Software Testing and Quality Assurance (5cr) in autumn 2025
The course runs in autumn 2025 with weekly lectures during 1.9.-7.12.2025 on Tuesdays 10-12. Additionally, teaching includes weekly individual exercises and group assignments. The course is graded on scale 0-5 and the grading is based on the assignments; there is no exam in the course. The lectures are given in person at the Aalto University Otaniemi campus in Espoo. The course learning outcomes and contents are presented in the Student information system SISU (https://sisu.aalto.fi/student/courseunit/aalto-CU-1150973104-20240801/brochure). The already available course material includes lecture slides, course workspace in MyCourses (Moodle) with assignments, and some automatic tools to assist grading. The course teaching language is English.
Course participants are mainly Master’s students in the Software and Service Engineering major. The course has previously had approximately 70 students. Students are expected to have basic knowledge and experience in programming and software development. Recommended prerequisites include the
Your tasks, responsibilities and collaboration partners
You will take responsibility for teaching the course Software Testing and Quality Assurance in autumn 2025. The teaching tasks include giving weekly lectures, giving assessment and feedback on student assignments, communicating with students in person, through email and chat, giving students advice and answering their questions, as well as coordinating a team of teaching assistants. The teacher responsible for the course will assist with administrative tasks such as registering final grades and providing background support.
In addition to you, the course personnel includes teaching assistants (TAs) who you can share tasks with. The teacher responsible for the course is Assistant Professor Fabian Fagerholm who gives you onboarding and support with course preparations and practicalities. In any practical details, the teaching coordinator and other CS department staff are at your service.
About you
Senior-level practical experience in the scope of the course with emphasis on in-depth skills in automated testing, combined with a Master’s degree in Computer Science or other relevant field, provide you with the essential background for this position.
We appreciate previous teaching experience preferably in Higher Education, pedagogical courses for example in University Pedagogy, as well as collected and summarized student feedback or received assessment of teaching competence. When needed, assessment of teaching competence can be included in the recruitment process. Fluent skills in written and oral English are required. Communication skills in Finnish are a benefit because of students’ right to complete courses in Finnish. Because of the short notice before the teaching starts, you are already located in Finland.
What we offer
The task is part-time and fixed-term for the autumn 2025 course implementation. The estimated workload is ca 20-40%. The exact duration and part-time percentage of the position will be agreed on with the candidate.
In the position, you gain teaching experience and experience in teaching development, you get student feedback and new collaboration partners. At Aalto, student feedback is collected in a centralized system with joint Aalto questions and an opportunity to ask course-specific questions. After the course, the feedback is available for you.
