The Department of Chemistry at Worcester Polytechnic Institute is seeking a part-time adjunct faculty to teach a specialized course on Drug Regulations in an online/asynchronous delivery format.

This position involves engaging students with the scientific, legal, and ethical aspects of drug development, approval processes, and regulatory compliance in the pharmaceutical industry. The successful candidate will bring a combination of industry experience and academic knowledge to provide real-world context for students pursuing careers in pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, biotechnology, or regulatory affairs.

This course will be delivered online in an online/asynchronous format. Although this is a 100% remote position, all applicants must be US-based.

Position Overview:

The Department of Chemistry is seeking an adjunct faculty member to teach a specialized course on Drug Regulation. This position involves engaging students with the scientific, legal, and ethical aspects of drug development, approval processes, and regulatory compliance in the pharmaceutical industry. The successful candidate will bring a combination of industry experience and academic knowledge to provide real-world context for students pursuing careers in pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, biotechnology, or regulatory affairs.

Key Responsibilities:

- Develop and deliver a comprehensive course on drug regulation, including topics such as FDA regulations, international regulatory standards, clinical trials, drug approval pathways, and post-market surveillance.

- Teach both theoretical and practical aspects of drug regulation, incorporating case studies and current industry trends.

- Provide students with an understanding of the chemistry behind pharmaceutical development and how it intersects with regulatory standards.

- Design and grade exams, assignments, and projects that align with course objectives.

- Maintain office hours and be available for student consultations to support learning and professional development.

- Collaborate with departmental faculty and staff to ensure the course content aligns with the department’s overall goals and curriculum.

Qualifications:

- Ph.D. in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related field is preferred; a master’s degree with significant industry experience may be considered.

- Prior teaching experience at the college level is desirable but not required.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to engaging students in an inclusive, supportive learning environment.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

- Experience with regulatory submissions, including Investigational New Drug (IND) applications, New Drug Applications (NDA), or Biologics License Applications (BLA).

- Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulations.

- Experience in clinical trials or working knowledge of the stages of drug development from discovery to post-marketing.

- Ability to incorporate industry insights and regulatory updates into the classroom. - Expertise in drug regulatory frameworks (e.g., FDA, EMA, ICH) and the chemistry involved in drug development is preferred.

- Minimum of 5 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry or a regulatory agency is preferred.
