Job Description
The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) Sanford Center for Aging (SCA) Transportation Program is recruiting for a part-time driver to operate an 8-person van with wheelchair lift, and an SUV. ***This position does not provide layoff rights and is contingent upon funding. The program provides transportation to adults 60 years of age and older who have limited other transportation options for essential errands, medical appointments, and participation in wellness programs.
This position requires a moderate level of independence and sound decision-making to ensure safe, efficient transportation services. The driver will plan routes and schedules for multiple client pick-ups and drop-offs, exercising good judgment to navigate various driving situations, including those impacted by traffic, weather, and limited space in parking lots or narrow streets.
A strong focus on client safety is essential, with responsibilities including assessing whether to leave passengers in the vehicle, accommodating each elder client’s unique physical abilities, and using the wheelchair lift or vehicle running board to assist clients safely in and out of the vehicle. The driver must be prepared to adjust to changes in the daily schedule due to appointment delays or wait times, coordinating transport across Reno/Sparks to accommodate these shifts effectively.
Operating an 8-passenger van equipped with a wheelchair lift, as well as a Toyota RAV4, the driver will receive training to safely operate the wheelchair lift and will share responsibility for routine maintenance of the vehicles and lift. Maintaining professional boundaries is essential, as clients may occasionally request assistance beyond the scope of this role.
Duties include (but are not limited to):
Represents Sanford Center for Aging transportation services
Safely transports participants, providing “door-through-door” assistance when possible
Manages vehicle loading/unloading and follows assigned schedules
Drives defensively, adhering to all safety practices and laws
Assists participants with safe entry/exit, including lift use and securing mobility aids
Conducts pre-trip inspections, maintains cleanliness, and monitors vehicle for repairs
Operates safely in adverse weather
Monitors passenger behavior for safety and administers first aid if needed
Maintains accurate rosters, trip logs, and mileage records

Required Qualifications
Two years of motor vehicle driving experience.
Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety.
Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
A valid Class “C” driver’s license or higher operator’s license is required at the time of appointment. In addition, proof of clean driving records must be provided at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuous employment.
Schedule
The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs.
Compensation Grade
Grade 22 (Entry, Step 01 $18.69/hr – Step 03 $20.25/hr)
In classified service, salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment, the candidate’s qualifications, internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.
