Job Description:
We're thrilled to announce that we are currently seeking candidates for various Educational Assistant positions within our Centre for Assessable Learning team. The Educational Assistant will provide general support to a student with a disability. The nature of the assistance will vary depending on the disability-related needs of the student and the academic demands and setting in which they are participating. Generally, the Educational Assistant may be responsible for ensuring the student has access to course content, or supporting their ability to engage in the learning environment, by employing either physical or cognitive/behavioural strategies. Working in a variety of settings, the incumbent will maintain confidentiality and strategically handle conflicts of interest.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Educational Assistant (EA) will engage in tasks and strategies that support the student’s specific need in their learning environment. Examples of possible duties include:
Assist the student with mobility difficulties to navigate their way to class (elevator buttons, hallways, doors that are not automatic, confusing directions).
Take books or devices out of bags, open books/devices, turn pages, start recording devices (may also take notes) for students with physical impairments
Assist after the lesson has been delivered for those that require additional support - for example, for students who have trouble concentrating and may miss some of the directions in the lesson, or provide additional direction until the teacher can get around to the student, if the student has difficulty taking in instruction
Assist student during the lecture through cueing and redirection to support them to remain engaged, on task, and able to participate
Support students in communicating/engaging with professors and peers during learning activities
Support the student to engage safely in the learning environment - for example, by providing physical support, cueing, or supervision
Help the student with physical disabilities to do research in the library, manage paper, etc.
Required Qualifications:
Minimum two (2) year diploma or equivalent in Developmental Services Worker, Early Childhood Education, Social Service Worker, Occupational Therapist/Physiotherapist Assistant, or related field; dependent on nature of their assigned student’s needs. Ideally the candidate would hold a diploma in one of the fields of study outlined above, or working towards obtaining a diploma is also acceptable;
CPR, First Aid or willing to obtain required;
Minimum two (2) years’ experience working with individuals with disabilities is an asset.
This position requires on-site work at Algonquin College's Woodroffe (Ottawa) Campus.
*This position is paid at Payband Support Services Officer A - PB 6 ($18.46-$21.46/hour)
*Shifts vary 5 days a week.
*Contracts Lengths vary from 4 months to 1 year
