We are looking to hire an Animal Study Manager within the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Georgetown University Medical Center, School of Medicine – Georgetown University. This position is critical to the successful implementation of grant-funded studies in the woodchuck animal model, and as such, it is expected that the applicant has experience in the handling of woodchucks (preferred) or at least of rodents and/or comparable animal species. Together with the PI, he/she coordinates and manages woodchuck-specific projects and then performs all animal procedures independently, including the housing, maintenance and surgery of woodchucks. The individual is responsible for the sampling of woodchucks, including the collection of blood, liver and other tissues. He/she trains new animal staff in procedures relating to the housing, maintenance, sampling, and surgery of woodchucks. This position also involves sample processing and lab assays to assist with sample analysis during work intense periods. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Handle the housing and checking of woodchucks.

  • Prepare and administer drugs and experimental compounds to woodchucks by various routes.

  • Perform ultrasounds for monitoring tumor development, obtaining liver tissues by needle biopsy.

  • Perform periodic blood sampling of woodchucks.

  • Collect and organize animal records and data.

  • Train new animal staff and subsequent supervision in woodchuck-specific procedures.

  • Assist with sample processing and assay.

Work Interactions

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is dedicated to the study of infectious diseases caused by diverse pathogens, including basic research on and treatment of hepatitis B virus in the woodchuck animal model. The individual is a team member of the PI’s group and critical for the ongoing and future woodchuck studies. He/she reports directly to the PI. He/she interacts with other members of the PI’s group to coordinate sample acquisition with lab processing. He/she interacts further with veterinarians, veterinarian technical staff and animal husbandry staff of the animal facility concerning the general health and well-being of woodchucks.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Prior independent technical experience with the routine handling, housing, dosing, sampling, and surgeries in rodents/comparable animal species, and with the processing of samples infected with hepatitis B virus or other infectious pathogens

  • Certified via AAALAC modules and approved by the IACUC for work in the animal facility (or obtain renewal of certification within 2 weeks of hire if not current)

  • The individual will be required to train through the laboratory manager to be able to assay samples during work intense periods

  • Expected to participate in weekend and holiday rotations among other project staff to observe and dose woodchucks when called for in the protocols or by the Veterinarians of the animal facility

Preferred Requirements and Qualifications

  • Many years of skills and experience working with rodents or comparable animal species (3-5 years total) will be given equal preference in lieu of college/bachelor’s and/or master’s degree academic qualifications

  • A preference (and a premium) will be placed on individuals with experience in the woodchuck model because of its rarity and uniqueness in the area of animal model applications

  • Requires prior experience for performing independently and/or under supervision, the routine handling, housing, dosing, sampling, and surgeries in rodents/comparable animal species

  • Must be willing and able to acquire skills and experience with woodchucks

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$21.16 - $35.29

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
