Job Summary
Working independently and under general supervision from the Principal Investigator, provides support to epidemiologic research studies. May be responsible for the following activities: managing biospecimens and lab equipment, coordinating selection of samples, aliquoting and shipment to outside labs, ordering lab supplies and facilitating study operations. Maintenance contract upkeep and repairs on equipment.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary Laboratory Duties:
1. Coordinate and manage various laboratory projects requiring the accurate creation of sample aliquots for shipment to internal and external collaborators.
2. Process blood, urine, saliva, peritoneal fluid and store in the biorepository.
3. Inventory and organize biospecimens in coordination with our IS Project Manager.
4. Train and oversee work study students and research assistants on aliquoting, study follow ups, and other assorted duties.
5. Assist with staff schedule planning.
6. Order laboratory supplies as needed, such as pipette tips, gloves, cryovials, etc.
7. Manage laboratory maintenance, including pipette calibration and freezer and centrifuge maintenance.
8. Responsible for receiving and handling after hours freezer failure notifications.
9. Ability to problem solve and determine best course of action with little direction
10. Act as a lead, assign and prioritize workflow, troubleshoot issues
11. Work on projects, coordinate work, take initiative using all available resources, follow through on issues when needed, apply knowledge as appropriate with little direction
12. Provide cross coverage as needed
13. Follow HIPAA guidelines for the management of patient privacy and confidentiality
14. Complete special projects as needed
15. Other duties, as assigned
Primary Management Duties:
1. Supervises the overall operation and smooth functioning of the laboratory, including delegating tasks and responsibilities to lab members
2. Trains and independently supervises research staff, student interns, sponsored staff, and volunteers in specific lab procedures
3. Supervises, teaches, and advises all lab members on established lab protocol.
4. Demonstrate professionalism and respect for individual needs
5. Create a friendly and cooperative environment by responding to lab members needs and or issues to maintain effective teamwork relationships
6. Highly organized and able to effectively prioritize tasks to consistently meet Deadlines
7. Respond to requests for assistance on research, clinic, and administrative sides as needed.
8. Use EPIC to review patient medical records and gather relevant research data to include chemotherapy regiment, recurrence, overall survival, and final pathology reports
10. Ensure and adhere to all ethical and regulatory standards set by the Institutional Review Board ensuring protection of human subjects involved in research
11. Maintain inventory and safety of samples; including those stored in liquid nitrogen.
12. Monitor and maintain inventory of all research supplies and biospecimens.
13. All other duties as assigned
Primary Administrative Duties:
1. Coordinates purchasing (infrastructure and supplies) for the lab with departmental administration.
2. In conjunction with Research Program Manager/Principal Investigator, follows established protocols for sample processing and aliquoting.
3. Follow up with subjects enrolled in studies, as needed.
4. Responsible for training and orienting new laboratory staff. May serve as a team leader or in a supervisory capacity for research assistants.
5. Monitors and maintains inventory of all research supplies and biospecimens in the laboratory.
6. Ensure the smooth operation of the research laboratory.
7. Process purchase requisitions, special orders, and reimbursements while maintaining research supply inventory.
8. Maintain and troubleshoot scientific equipment, negotiate service contracts, and resolve billing disputes.
9. Serve as Laboratory Radiation safety officer, Laboratory Safety officer, and Laboratory Biosafety officer to ensure and enforce all regulatory and compliance activities for the laboratory under DEA, OSHA, USDA, FDA and NRC guidelines
