Job Description
Position Overview: The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Head Cheerleading Coach serves as the primary creative and supervisory leader of the Cheer Team. This seasonal position will oversee, teach, and direct practices and game day performances while ensuring a quality, inclusive, safe, fun, and diverse environment. The coach will contribute to the creation of an entertaining and premier-level collegiate atmosphere for GVSU football, men’s and women’s basketball home games, in addition to other appearances and events.
Salary & Benefits: Stipend of $12,000.
Primary Duties
Provide leadership and oversight to the GVSU Cheer Team through all aspects as coach, prioritizing the development, guidance, encouragement and safety of all student-athletes to ensure a positive and supportive experience that supports student well-being.
Oversee team choreography, music selection, technical instruction, and other essential team elements.
Supervise team performances at GVSU Football, men’s and women’s basketball, and other home competitions or appearances, as well as designated neutral-site and post-season games.
Organize and conduct weekly practices for the team.
Position the Cheer Team, through skill development, guidance and instruction, to consistently compete at a high level in selected competitions.
Assist with planning and organizing registration and travel logistics for camps, competitions, and off-campus appearances or performances.
Maintain overall team membership goals and gameday participation; facilitate annual tryouts for selecting roster placements and new team members.
Assist with managing appearance requests both on-campus and within the community.
Maintain professional conduct for self, staff, and student-athletes while actively promoting a positive image of the University, the Department, and teams within the program.
Other duties as required/assigned related to supporting the Cheer Team, Spirit Program, departmental, and University initiatives as required by leadership.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree.
Experience with competitive cheerleading at the high school or collegiate level.
Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification or the ability to obtain after hire.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience as a coach in competitive cheer.
A strong network and connections within the cheer community.
Experience in collegiate or professional cheer.

Working Conditions:
Work is required during frequent evenings and weekends as needed. Some travel is also required.
